Archaeology & Cultural Resource Management

With more than 30 years of experience in cultural & environmental resource management, we’ve developed the means to shed light on black box challenges. Tremaine’s study of surface and buried landscapes examine a property’s use-history to assess its cultural & biological data potential for integrity, and development of resource expectations if necessary for field testing.

  • Archaeological Survey
  • Eligibility evaluations for the CRHP and NRHP
  • CEQA and NEPA/Section 106 compliance support
  • Archaeological testing, evaluation, and data recovery
  • Artifact analysis, curation coordination, and reporting
  • Archaeological sensitivity and predictive modeling
  • Geoarchaeological and environmental sequence stratigraphy (ESS) studies
  • Records searches, in-depth archival research, and GIS-integrated contextual analysis
  • Site protection, preservation, mitigation, monitoring, and management plans
  • Construction monitoring and worker environmental awareness training (WEAP)
  • Tribal consultation support and coordination

Subsurface
Investigation

Tremaine’s patented and copyrighted approach first defines a project area’s geological, hydrological & anthropogenic contexts for resources. When warranted by both evidence and development plans, we test our expectations using a mixed strategy of eyes-on survey, remote sensing methods, and, where warranted, limited downhole sampling, depending on project requirements. The entire effort is designed to be a minimally invasive and often nondestructive means to interrogate an area for cultural and biological resources.

  • Rapid subsurface surveying and mapping over large areas
  • Near-surface soil and stratigraphic characterization
  • Geoarchaeological targeting and buried feature detection
  • Subsurface void, anomaly, and buried infrastructure detection
  • Pipeline, septic, and buried metal investigations
  • Soil contaminant and underground plume delineation
  • Levee and embankment assessment support
  • Environmental Sequence Stratigraphy (ESS) and electrical conductivity (EC) soil profiling using Geoprobe to ground-truth and refine subsurface interpretations
  • Advanced GIS-based spatial analysis and 3D subsurface modeling
  • High-resolution data visualization for planning, reporting, and decision-making

Biological & Environmental Services

At Tremaine, we specialize in comprehensive preconstruction surveys and assessments for state and federally listed species in compliance with CEQA, NEPA, and regulatory agency permit conditions. Our experienced biologists conduct habitat evaluations, species-specific protocol surveys, and clearance monitoring to ensure full regulatory compliance before ground-disturbing activities begin. We work closely with Caltrans, CDFW, USFWS, and project proponents to minimize environmental impact and prevent costly construction delays.

  • Biological & Environmental Resource Assessments (CEQA/NEPA; includes state & federally listed/T&E species)
  • Pre-Construction Surveys (state & federally listed species)
  • Marine Biology — Surveys & Monitoring
  • Natural Resource Protection Plans
  • Bird & Bat Exclusion Plans
  • Invasive Species Control Plans
  • Daily Biological Monitoring (construction phase)
  • Workers’ Environmental Awareness Training (WEAP)
  • Paleontological Resource Evaluations & Monitoring
