Archaeological Monitoring FAQs

An archaeological monitor observes designated construction and ground-disturbing activities for evidence of archaeological materials, features, deposits, or sensitive soils. The monitor documents the work and follows the project’s approved procedures if potential cultural resources are encountered.

Monitoring should be coordinated before the relevant ground disturbance begins. Early scheduling allows the consultant to review project requirements, confirm personnel availability, complete required onboarding, and coordinate with the construction team.

Tremaine can coordinate monitoring coverage based on the size, location, schedule, and complexity of the project, subject to personnel availability and project requirements.

Tremaine can support archaeological and cultural-resource components of Worker Environmental Awareness Program training, including information about recognition, avoidance, notification procedures, and project-specific compliance requirements.

The archaeological monitor follows the project’s approved discovery and notification procedures. This may include documenting the location, notifying designated project representatives, protecting the area from further disturbance, and coordinating appropriate evaluation or next steps.

Tremaine coordinates professionally with tribal representatives and tribal monitors when their participation is required or requested under the project’s consultation, mitigation, agreement, or monitoring procedures.
