The TREMAINE Team

Staff PhotoTREMAINE has a permanent staff that includes archaeologists, soil scientists, geophysicists, GIS analysts, and numerous field and laboratory technicians. With over 300 projects behind us, our senior officers, are each solid veterans of the resource management profession. We employ specialists in osteology, lithics, lab procedures, and field survey and excavation techniques. We are thoroughly versed in CEQA, Section 106, and NHPA compliance. Together we possess the complementary strengths of managerial excellence, regulatory knowledge, academic scholarship, and technical proficiency needed for your project.

Geophysics & Archaeology

Photo of EM3TREMAINE’S Underground Survey™ technology gives us a capability that is unique to archaeology. With the right terrain and soil conditions, we can discover and map archaeological sites or features without the need for excavation and testing. This saves time and money by informing you of what lies below the surface before construction begins. Having such information at the planning or reconnaissance phase improves archaeological survey results by dramatically reducing the number of construction work stoppages due to buried archaeological sites or features. Our technology and methods can also reduce the number of archaeological monitors necessary during construction.

Diagram of Conductivity ReadingsDepending upon the instrument array, TREMAINE’S Underground Survey™ technology can plot strata to a depth of 10 or 30 meters. Terrain permitting, we can record at a rate up to 300 data points per meter/sec, each tagged with a GPS coordinate with centimeter-level accuracy. With this fine scale of resolution, we produce accurate maps of near-surface soils and landforms and pinpoint where to excavate for further analysis. Our geoarchaeological and geophysical experts will use other remote-sensing instruments as appropriate for individual project needs.

What this means to you the Developer or Landowner
By effectively integrating scientific research and field methods with our geophysical technology, we are able to increase the speed and reliability of archaeological field survey data. Because our survey tells you of what lies above and below the ground we can reduce or eliminate work stoppages due to the inevitable "new discovery" of buried archaeological sites or features when hidden by grass, fill, or natural deposits. With our state-of-the-art integration of GPS technology and geophysical instrument array we can produce hyper accurate maps of:

  • Surface geomorphology and buried soil sediments
  • Water loss due to faulty pipe or canal seepage
  • Buried infrastructure including pipes, cables, and voids*
  • Toxic or other substance plumes
  • The location of demolished buildings, vertical drifts (mines)
  • Disturbed soils, including filled-in trenches, fence lines, etc.
*This is NOT Utility Locating or Subsurface Utility Engineering
What this means to you the Archaeologist, Soils Scientist and Geologist
The successful integration of GPS and geophysics instrumentation extends the capability of sediments or soils mapping. TREMAINE’S UST™ system can discover and map:
  • Buried landforms, including filled-in streams, marshes, or ancient lakeshore
  • Buried archaeological sites or features detected directly or identify their potential location with the discovery of buried landforms such as the confluence of buried streams
  • Hyper-accurate soils and geology maps along x, y and z coordinates
  • Void detection, including historic mines, cemeteries (tombs and caskets)
